What is YouTube ?

Youtube is a video sharing website which was created by three former PayPal employees  Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim when Hurley and Chen where trying to share a video of a party with Karim and were unable to find a suitable way of sharing it with him. YouTube has been owned by google since late 2006 . The site allows users to upload, view, and share videos, and it makes use of Adobe Flash Video and HTML5 technology to display a wide variety of user-generated and corporate media video. Available content includes video clips, TV clips, music videos, and other content such as video blogging, short original videos, and educational videos. Most of the content on YouTube has been uploaded by individuals, but media corporations including CBS, the BBC, Vevo, Hulu, and other organizations offer some of their material via YouTube, as part of the YouTube partnership program. Unregistered users can watch videos, and registered users can upload an unlimited number of videos.

YouTube channels – the new emerging trend

According to Wikipedia, total number of videos on YouTube in 2011 was 83.4 million. So, people have now started creating their YouTube channels with a defined pattern of videos they upload. This is a very fast growing trend in today’s world. Everyone wants to create a channel whether comedy channel or technology related channels or maybe channels related to facts or pranks or social experiments or educational channels. I have observed many school kids who have not even learned to write their exams properly, create their channels, become the new tech gurus and upload the unboxing videos of the latest gadgets their fathers buy for them or themselves ! One such example is a boy who now has become world famous, Justin Bieber ! Bieber’s current manager, Scooter Braun, discovered him through a YouTube video that his mother uploaded and contacted his mother to work with him. See the boy today !

Moreover , YouTube videos provide great entertainment so comedy channels are becoming a great hit among viewers.
The video of college guys dancing on Sunny Leone’s item number from Ragini mms , also went viral. So much that they created many more videos after that and in a span of a few days , everybody’s whatsapp video gallery was full of their hilarious video !

Some Great Stories

One of the channels that have really gone viral is The Viral Fever. This channel is majorly responsible for starting off a trend on YouTube. The Viral Fever Videos are comedy videos either parodies on Bollywood movies or T.V shows or they are sarcastic on some the general habits of people or society. Their very first video got 17,000 views making it second most popular video in Indian Entertainment Category. With 2 channels (TVF Recycle Bin and TVF), the network has a total of 45 videos 20,548,204 views and 307,815 subscribers (as on Dec 24). TVF alone has 295,197 subscribers with 20,525,504 views on the videos and all this in two and a half years !
Another example is Superwoman , started by an Indo-Canadian, Lilly Singh. She is known for her satirical takes on everyday life. After beginning her channel in 2010, her videos have gathered over 400 million views and her channel has over 4 million subscribers.

How Facebook shaped the their existence

Apart from their own Facebook pages, if your video is good and creative and funny , there are millions of pages on facebook that are always in search of good stuff to share. Pages like ScoopWhoop, story pick always keep sharing funny videos .

Game of likes and subscribes !

The best part of YouTube culture is that anyone can make their YouTube channel, create and post videos and get famous ! Another reason why some people create their channel is because they get paid for it too ! YouTube pays a channel owner one dollar for one thousand views on his/her video. So not only for fun , it involves business too !

Social Experiments

Another thing that is gaining popularity nowadays on social media is social experiments that many people are conducting in real life on the streets ! A great example of such kind is Sahil Bedi, 18-year old who walked onto the city’s streets with a DSLR camera and a sense of purpose — creating videos that can inspire change.

A clip from his experiment.

The result was Public experiment on women abuse in India, a video that featured a van with tinted windows and a woman screaming for help from inside it. Shot in Naraina Industrial complex in Delhi, the video was a social experiment conducted by Bedi and his friend Pranjal Narang, who placed that van to see how many people would stop to help the distraught woman. Only three out of 27 people who crossed the van stopped to offer help.
